A.I. and I

AI is (finally) here!

Heard of ChatGPT? No? You must be hiding under a rock or more likely, buried in a bureaucracy which is decades behind in the technology it employs. The rest of us have at least heard of ChatGPT and of course, DALL.E 2, the text-to-image generator.

My only question after using several badly developed chatbots was: Shouldn’t it be more interactive? After all, we do have the technology to develop it. The answer to that question is ChatGPT, an A.I. chatbot. launched in November 2022. When ChatGPT was launched, it felt like A.I. was finally here to stay and in a significant way because it provides the public with human-like interactions. Interacting with it felt easy and natural.

What you get in response to prompts on, say, some well-known theory, are clear, generic answers. It did explain an economics theory very well, without the awful jargon and obfuscatory language economists usually employ. Overall, I’m loving it. You need to fact-check the information, though – this is also clarified before you enter your prompts – and use it as a blueprint, rather than as the final product, to gain a better understanding of whatever it is you want to know more about. What is mind-blowing is that it helps you write complex codes based on the specifications you provide and corrects mistakes in existing codes.

There’s a fun part too. ChatGPT can write jokes (some are actually good), fiction, essays, mails, resumes… And it can write poems. Acrostics? Shakespearean sonnet-style stuff? Limericks? Just a poem? Brilliant, but it has limitations. he language used is cliched. There’s no feeling, thought, insight or creative touch in its responses. It is a machine, after all.

Scared? Change is always scary until you embrace it. A.I. won’t replace workers but it will certainly change the way we work. Just like the pandemic did. Just like major technology and innovations in past years did. While you consider how A.I. is going to change your life, enjoy the poem ChatGPT composed on how to make today happen and also the image generated by DALL.E 2 in response to my prompts. I’m impressed.

Prompt: Write a poem on Make Today Happen.
Make today happen, don’t wait for tomorrow
For time is fleeting, and life is too short to borrow
Take hold of the present, seize the day with might
And let your actions speak, louder than words might.
Don’t let excuses hold you back, or fear take control
For within you lies a power, that can make you whole
Believe in yourself, and in the strength you possess
And let your dreams and passions, guide you to success.
Let every step you take, be towards your goal
And let each failure, be a lesson to behold
For with every challenge, comes an opportunity
To grow and learn, and find new possibilities.
So rise up and face the day, with a heart full of zeal
And let your determination, be the fire you feel
For today is a gift, that can never be replaced
So make it count, and make today happen with grace.
