We often overlook the things that matter most.
The things that matter most in life are often so simple and familiar that we often overlook them. We are busy chasing the future, which never arrives and lose the privilege of enjoying life which always happens only now, never in the past or future. Maybe that is why many never seem to have enough, how much ever we already possess. Perhaps we need to start living life the other way round—appreciate the simple and often profound things that matter in the big picture—instead of living in the past or future, dreaming of non-existent things that we believe will make us happy.
Take your health health, for instance. Your body works so hard for you. Do you give it the respect it deserves? Do you give it the break it needs by getting up, moving away from screens and taking quiet walks? By taking the time to introspect? When was the last time you took a walk, enjoying seasonal colors? Or even a short stroll in your neighborhood?
Taking long walks, natural light, getting a good dose of Mother Nature, and observing birds and animals help me understand myself better. It keeps me centered, joyful and peaceful. I’d not trade that time for anything else. Talking to friends—I know some from kindergarten!—and planning things with them is another priority. As is keeping in touch with loved ones. And above all, owning my time. I will never take these for granted.
The next time you are hurrying through life chasing the future, stop and appreciate the things that are irreplaceable in your life now. The people who have helped you, the acts of kindness that you cherish, the ones you love, a good night’s sleep, and your health, among other things. Then make a list of the things that you would never take for granted. You will see that the things you treasure most cannot be bought for money or replaced once they are gone. They are simple yet profound. They are priceless.
