A Party In October

Remembering a whimsical poem by George Cooper.

“October’s Party” by George Cooper captures autumn’s spirit perfectly. The poet had a younger audience in mind when he wrote this poem and it was one that I read as a child. Here’s the first stanza:

“October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came—
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.”

He goes on to describe the colors of chestnut, oak and maple leaves and their dance together. The party ends with all of them flying together. I remember it every fall when I watch leaves floating down or being blown around in circles by the wind.

Note: I’ll be posting next week and will be away for most of November. However, I will try to post later in November if time permits and if I have access to dependable WiFi.
